INTRODUCTION

In Galician region (north-west of Spain) genetics improvement programs are developing since 1990. They have contributed to the increase of the production trades of different livestock breeds, either in quantity as in quality, with actions for the necessary technical support to improve the farm efficiency and professionalism, contributing to its long-term feasibility. Among the objectives of the Genetic Improvement Integral Plan (1990-2000) and of the Breeding Improvement Program (2001-2006) are the increasing of profitability in Galician farms, of its competitiveness and of the breeders' standard of living, the modernisation of this sector in animal production, health and genetics, the improvement of the efficiency of the productive agrarian system and of the qualities in its productions and of the optimisation using the available sources.

Xenética Fontao is a public company created in 1998 and is participated by Galician Regional Government, through F.O.G.G.A. (Galician Fund of Agrariam Guarantee), and breeders associations: F.E.F.R.I.G.A. (Galician Holstein Federation) and A.C.R.U.G.A. (National Association of Rubia Gallega cattle breeders). This company manages the Galician Artificial Insemination Centre which has 470 bulls of Holstein, Rubia Gallega, Belgian Blue Beef and Limousin. In 1999, the molecular genetic laboratory was created in order to offer new services using the DNA biotechnology in health and livestock production.
